The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the ground handling company of Cebu Pacific to lay off more than 1,000 employees, or a quarter of its workforce, in the single-largest retrenchment in the local aviation industry due to the health crisis.

1Aviation Groundhandling Services Corp. on Thursday said the move was part of “drastic measures to ensure its survival” as the pandemic continued to pummel the air travel business.

Last day on July 20

“With a heavy heart, we are left with no other recourse but to let go of 25 percent of our total workforce,” the company said in a statement. The workers’ last day will be on July 20.

In April, 1Aviation laid off 400 newly hired workers, including check-in and boarding gate agents and baggage handlers, following the Luzon lockdown.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) laid off 300 ground staff last February, while Cebu Pacific retrenched almost 190 employees last March. AirAsia Philippines said it would lay off about 260 employees, including cabin crew, by the end of June.

Aviation ground handling, whose services include baggage sorting and aircraft towing, is a key sector in the airline business.

Cebu Pacific is the biggest client and also a part owner of 1Aviation, which is controlled by businessman Jefferson Cheng’s Philippine Airport Ground Support Solutions Inc.

Tan told employees about the layoffs at a virtual townhall on Tuesday morning, after initially asking employees to go on voluntary no-pay leave to avoid such cuts. It is not planning to shut any offices, according to a spokesperson.

In April, Tan said that Covid-19 presented the "single biggest crisis" Grab had faced in the eight years since its founding. He warned at the time that the startup would have to make "tough decisions" about cutting costs and managing capital.

The company had more than 7,000 employees before the layoffs.

“With the pandemic, so they are planning on going cashless pero siyempre yung downside nito for the transportation industry we will have to lay off roughy around a thousand employees. Those are mostly konduktors,” ani Briones.

"Cashless payments will be beneficial to operators since it reduces pilferage and other losses. It also automates accounting and immediately provides ridership reports to the operator for analysis of its operations. This is a game-changer, as it enables the operator to further improve its service,” ani Tugade.

“If they can help us slow things down a little bit when it comes to the modernization programs siguro, or help us financially, if there is a plan to subsidize these technologies na i-add namin, that will greatly help us, so if they can do that, sana magawan ng paraan,” ani Briones.
