Chaos as thousands return to work in Metro Manila

Workers were forced to walk or to hitch rides on trucks or, if they were lucky, in cars due to a lack of public transportation. Many were stranded.

They were raring to go back to work on Monday after three months of being cooped up at home.

But the lack of public transportation forced thousands on the first day of general community quarantine (GCQ) in Metro Manila to walk to offices, hitch rides on the backs of trucks or, if they were lucky, in private vehicles. Others were stranded.

1st day of Metro Manila GCQ: ‘Walang masakyan’

The commute was already bad pre-lockdown in early March. It became worse when Metro Manila shifted to the much more relaxed general community quarantine (GCQ) on Monday, June 1.

Several people were stranded along Metro Manila roads on Monday, as the capital region reopened without sufficient options for mass transportation.

Majority of industries were allowed to go back to work under GCQ. However, while most commuters relied on public transportation, the government allowed the limited operation only of train systems, bus augmentation, taxis, transport network vehicle services, shuttle services, and point-to-point buses.

The lack of public utility vehicles (PUVs) and the limited passenger capacity of the modes allowed to operated pushed people to walk or wait for the emergency vehicle augmentation from the national government.

"Grabe ang social injustice ng GCQ! I've been waiting for more than two hours para lang makasakay hanggang MRT North Avenue and walang masakyan. 'Yung iba dito mas matagal nang naghihintay. This is unfair and unhealthy. Hustisya? More likely, anti-poor," said Twitter user @chekoiiii.

(The social injustice during GCQ is excessive! I've been waiting for more than two hours just to get a ride up to MRT North Avenue, but I can't get one. Others here have been waiting longer. This is unfair and unhealthy. What justice? More likely, it's anti-poor.)

"Wala namang bisikleta, wala namang pambili...

"We allowed a little bit of increase at least 25 percent more because kawawa naman 'yung driver.

Huge fire hits Mandaluyong barangay with highest COVID-19 cases

A huge fire broke out in a residential area in Mandaluyong City on Monday afternoon, forcing residents to flee their homes for safety amid the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

City Fire Marshall Supt. Jose Callos, Jr. said the alarm level of the fire has been raised to Task Force Bravo.

He told the Manila Bulletin that they were having difficulty containing the fire because fire trucks cannot get near the area because of the tight alleyways.

Callos said that they have already requested for helicopters that would drop water into the blaze to extinguish it.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire engulfed houses at Block 37 in Barangay Addition Hills at around 5:30 p.m.

The village was recently placed under a week-long lockdown due to the high number of COVID-19 cases in the area. The Mandaluyong City Public Information Office said there were 122 confirmed cases in the Barangay Additional Hills as of May 30, the highest number among barangays in the city.

As of writing, firefighters are still trying to contain the blaze.
